Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Total Body Lift and More

Many medical studies have shown that obesity is linked to a number of diseases and illnesses in modern society. The majority of adults in the United States are either overweight or obese, with the numbers rising every year. To take the bold step and lose a large amount of weight is not only incredibly brave, but a powerful boost to your appearance, self-esteem, and long-term health.

Unfortunately, those who lose massive amounts of weight are usually faced with sagging excess skin that has lost its elasticity over time. Folds of skin can cause more than cosmetic problems; rashes and severe discomfort often occur when folds of loose skin rub against each other.

Introducing the Total Body Lift™

One of the most popular types of plastic surgery after weight loss offered at the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office of Dr. Hurwitz is his signature Total Body Lift™. This procedure takes body contouring to a new level with impressive results. Using a combination of liposuction, skin excision, and breast procedures, Dr. Hurwitz can use the Total Body Lift™ to sculpt a new figure for you. You've done the hard part and lost all that weight. Now find out how plastic surgery after weight loss can help you show your success to the world!

Initially developed by Dr. Hurwitz at his Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania practice, Total Body Lift™ is an innovative new concept that goes beyond traditional body contouring that only addresses the lower body. Total Body Lift™ also allows the chest, back, and arms to be transformed as well. Because the Total Body Lift™ is a combination of the traditional upper body lift and lower body lift, the surgery can often take about nine hours for Dr. Hurwitz to complete.

Total Body Lift™ — Upper Body

In this plastic surgery procedure, liposuction is used to remove the excess fat that remains after initial weight loss. Large amounts of skin are removed from the upper body and any rolls of skin can be smoothed out. Once the contours have been refined, the skin is laid back into place and sutured.

For the most part, incisions for a Total Body Lift™ are relatively discreet, though some scarring is inevitable with most forms of plastic surgery after weight loss. The incision for the upper body lift encircles the chest; women often find that they can partially hide their scars with their breasts and bras. Body hair may make the line less noticeable on men's chests.

When performing Total Body Lift™ on the upper body, Dr. Hurwitz can use male breast reduction to give men firmer chests. For his female patients, a breast lift or breast reduction can help reduce sagging and improve the appearance and silhouette of the breasts.

An arm lift is another form of plastic surgery often required after massive weight loss. The patients who visit our Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania clinic are often unhappy to find that even though they have lost a great deal of weight, they feel uncomfortable wearing sleeveless shirts, tank tops, or swimsuits because of the excess flaps of skin hanging from their arms. An arm lift is performed by making an incision along the inner arm so Dr. Hurwitz can remove excess fat and skin to create a more pleasing contour.

The decision to perform any of these procedures is made during pre-operative consultations, as Dr. Hurwitz is always careful to involve his patients in the customization of their treatment plans.

Total Body Lift™ — Lower Body

Total Body Lift™ for the lower body involves removing excess skin and fat in the lower abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and liposculpture are often used to firm up the waistline and buttocks before the excess skin is treated. Then, a thigh lift, or thighplasty, is used to gather up and remove excess skin in the hip and thigh area.

The thigh lift procedure is intended to restore a normal contour to the thighs and hips, and can be combined with a buttock lift for a smoother silhouette. Incisions for a thigh lift are made vertically, along the inside of the thigh where the scars will be least visible. A second incision is usually made from the front of the groin back toward the buttock on each leg.

Though the scars for this type of plastic surgery after weight loss will always be visible, Pittsburgh plastic surgeon Dr. Hurwitz will give you detailed instructions to help your scars heal as quickly and effectively as possible.

As with every kind of plastic surgery, Total Body Lift™ after weight loss carries with it some risks, including possible infection, delayed wound healing, asymmetry, and other medical complications. It is important to follow all instructions and advice given to you by Dr. Hurwitz before and after the surgery. His experience and knowledge of plastic surgery after weight loss means that when you come to his Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office to discuss Total Body Lift™, you will be in capable and caring hands.
